    How the explorer works

Each company's four raw measurements — total US patents granted 2015–2025, filing velocity, the number of distinct CPC technology classes it patents in, and its average claims per patent — are normalized to a 0–100 scale across the 150 largest holders. The explorer then multiplies each normalized dimension by the weight you choose, sums them, and re-ranks. At the default weighting of 40% volume, 20% velocity, 25% breadth, and 15% depth, the result reproduces the published Innovation Score; change the weights and you can ask different questions — for example, set velocity to 100% to surface the fastest-accelerating filers regardless of size. All figures come from the public USPTO PatentsView dataset; see our methodology for how each dimension is computed. The tool runs entirely in your browser — nothing you adjust is sent anywhere.
